Every few months someone asks me to fix a site that cost almost nothing to build. The fix usually costs more than a proper build would have. Here is where the money goes.

1. It is slow, and slow costs traffic

Cheap builds lean on page builders stacked on themes stacked on twenty plugins. Every layer adds weight. Visitors on phones leave before it paints, and search engines take page speed into account. You do not see the customers you never got.

2. You do not actually own it

Sometimes the domain is registered in the builder name, the hosting is on their account, and the site lives inside a proprietary platform you cannot export. Moving away means rebuilding from zero. Always check three things: the domain is registered to you, the hosting is in your name, and you can download a full backup.

3. The SEO groundwork is missing

No proper titles, duplicate meta descriptions, no sitemap, headings used as decoration, images with no alt text, no structured data. None of this is visible on the surface, which is exactly why it gets skipped. Retrofitting it later is more expensive than doing it during the build.

4. Security is somebody else problem

Unmaintained plugins are the most common way small business sites get compromised. Cleaning an infected site, removing a search-engine blacklist and restoring trust costs far more than a maintenance plan.

5. It cannot grow

You want a booking form, a second language, a product catalogue. The cheap build was never structured for any of it, so the answer becomes "we need to start over" — for the second time.

6. Nobody is there afterwards

The lowest bidder rarely sticks around. When something breaks at 9am on a Monday, you are searching for a new developer instead of sending one message.

What to check before you buy

Ask who owns the domain, hosting and code. Ask what happens after launch — updates, backups, support, and at what price. Ask to see a live site they built and run it through a public page speed test yourself. Ask whether you can export your content. Ask what is explicitly not included.

A well-built site is not expensive because of the design. It is worth the money because of everything you never have to think about again.
